Do Prop Firms Charge Hidden Fees? Every Cost After the Ticket Price

Everyone shows you one number at checkout. The cost that matters is the number you reach by the time you take a first withdrawal.

Why the ticket price is not what you pay

The advertised challenge price is the entry fee, not the total. The real cost is that price plus any activation, reset, monthly data, payout and inactivity charges a firm adds before and after you pass. Ordane accounts trade simulated capital, meaning practice funds and no deposit, so no money changes hands to open one.

One-time versus recurring, the only distinction that matters

There is one line that organises every fee: is it charged once, or does it repeat? A one-time charge stings and ends. A recurring charge compounds while you trade, whether the account is winning, losing, or idle. FTMO bills its challenge as a one-time fee and charges no monthly subscription for ongoing trading, according to FTMO pricing documentation. Apex Trader Funding, by contrast, bills the evaluation itself monthly, from $167 a month for the 25K account to $677 a month for the 300K account, per Apex's published pricing. Same product category, opposite billing shape. The price on the page is a floor. The recurring fees decide the ceiling.

The six fees that appear after you pay

There are six charges a prop firm can levy. Not every firm charges all six, but every firm charges some. Here is the full map, with a sourced range for each.

The six fees, when each is charged, and a sourced range
FeeWhen it is chargedOne-time or recurringTypical range (sourced)
Evaluation or challengeAt purchase, to startOne-time or monthlyAbout EUR 89 one-time for a small FTMO account; $49 to $199 a month at Topstep
ActivationThe moment you passOne-time$69 to $149 at Apex; $149 at Topstep on the Standard path
ResetTo restart a failed evaluationOne-time, per reset$49 to $199 at Topstep by account size
Monthly platform and market dataEvery month you hold the accountRecurringAbout $70 to $80 a month at Topstep for live data; CME non-professional feeds run about $3 to $15 per exchange
Payout processingAt withdrawalPer payout$30 per ACH or Wire withdrawal at Topstep; $0 via Aeropay or Wise
InactivityAfter a set idle periodRecurring while idleAbout EUR 35 a month from day 61 at The5ers; $40 to $50 a month elsewhere

Two of these surprise people the most. The activation fee is charged at the exact moment you succeed at Apex Trader Funding, so the reward for passing is another invoice of $69 to $149. And CME market-data fees for non-professional traders recur every month whether or not a trader places a single trade, running about $3 to $15 per exchange, because live futures quotes are billed by the exchange, not the prop firm.

What it really costs to reach a first payout

A worked example, start to first withdrawal

Numbers beat adjectives. Take one named path: Topstep's 100K Standard Trading Combine, and walk it from purchase to a first withdrawal. Assume two months to pass, one failed attempt that needs a reset, and a first payout by ACH.

  • Combine subscription, two months at $99: $198
  • One reset after the failed attempt: $99
  • Activation fee on passing, Standard path: $149
  • Live market data, two months at about $70 to $80: roughly $150
  • Payout processing on the first ACH withdrawal: $30

That totals roughly $626 to reach a first payout on Topstep's 100K Standard Combine, against a monthly checkout price of $99. The real cost was about six times the number a trader anchors on at checkout. Every input here is volatile and dated; treat the method, not the exact sum, as the takeaway.

Why resets are where the money goes

The reset is the line that compounds fastest. A Topstep reset at the 100K size costs $99, the same as a fresh month of the Combine. Two failed attempts and two resets can quietly cost more than the account did. This is also why a firm that charges no reset fee changes the math for anyone who does not pass on the first try. How to find every fee before you pay

You do not need insider access to surface a firm's full fee schedule. You need its own pages and the right search terms.

Open the terms of service and the pricing page, then use your browser's find command and search each of these words in turn: fee, monthly, subscription, activation, reset, minimum, inactivity, data, platform, and withdrawal. Each hit is a charge. Each charge belongs in your total.

Then apply the absence rule: a pricing page that advertises a headline number but has no matching fee schedule in the terms is not a cheap product, it is an unpriced one. Silence is not zero. The charge that hides longest is the payout or processing fee, because it appears only at withdrawal, after a trader has already passed and started to count on the money. Topstep publishes this one plainly at $30 per ACH or Wire withdrawal and $0 via Aeropay or Wise.

This page owns the fee taxonomy and the arithmetic. The wider pre-purchase document check, reading the drawdown rules, the consistency clauses, and the payout conditions line by line, is its own discipline. For that full method, use the pre-purchase audit.

What named firms charge, headline price and real cost

Here is the honest version across four live firms. Where a competitor's structure genuinely beats Ordane, it is recorded as a competitor win. A blank cell means we did not source that figure here, not that the fee is zero; check the firm's terms.

Read the wins plainly. FTMO charges no monthly subscription for ongoing trading, which beats any firm that bills a trader every month it holds the account. FTMO also refunds the challenge fee once, paid back with the trader's first profit split. The5ers lets a trader start its Bootcamp for $95 and only charges the remaining $205 if the trader succeeds, so the up-front cost is lower than a single full payment. Topstep also offers a No Activation Fee path that waives the $149 activation in exchange for a higher monthly subscription. None of that is hidden here. This table is volatile, sourced on 2026-07-24, and valid for about 90 days.

What Ordane charges, and what it does not

First the concession, without hedging: Ordane is new. There is no long payout history to point to, and none will be manufactured. What a trader can verify today is the price sheet and the rulebook, both public before the first trade.

Now the structure. Ordane charges one price per simulated account, one time, ranging from $139 for the $10,000 size to $1,399 for the $150,000 size. There is no reset fee and no monthly subscription; Ordane's pricing page states one price with no recurring fees or hidden tiers. The profit split starts at a 60 percent floor on the first withdrawal and rises 5 points with every withdrawal, up to 100 percent, with no withdrawal-time deduction beyond what the ladder states.

This is not a claim that Ordane's total is the lowest anywhere; that depends on account size and how many resets a trader would need elsewhere, and those change. What is verifiable is narrower and truer: the fee list is short and published, and the same rules sit in Rulebook Version 1.0, public, versioned, and never retroactive. The price and the rules are one closed surface, not two moving targets. If you are still deciding whether the category deserves your money at all, start with whether prop firms are legit.

Questions traders ask about prop firm fees

Do prop firms charge monthly fees?

Many do. Apex bills its evaluation monthly, from $167 to $677 by account size, and Topstep's Combine runs $49 to $199 a month. Others, like FTMO, charge a one-time fee and no monthly subscription for ongoing trading. Always check whether the price repeats.

What is a prop firm activation fee?

It is a charge levied the moment you pass, before you can start the account you just earned. Apex charges $69 to $149 one-time, and Topstep charges $149 on its Standard path. Some firms waive it in exchange for a higher monthly subscription, so read which trade-off applies to you.

How much does a reset cost?

A reset restarts a failed evaluation. At Topstep it runs $49 to $199 depending on account size, roughly the price of another month of the Combine. Resets compound fastest: two failed attempts plus two resets can cost more than the original account did.

Is the challenge price one-time or recurring?

It depends entirely on the firm. FTMO's challenge is one-time and refundable on your first split. Apex bills the evaluation every month until you pass. Ordane charges one price, one time, per simulated account. The billing shape is the first thing to confirm.

How do I work out the real cost before I pay?

Add the entry fee, one likely reset, the activation fee, the monthly data and platform fees for the months you expect to hold the account, and the payout processing cut. Search the terms for fee, monthly, reset, activation, data, and withdrawal. The sum, not the headline, is your real cost.

Do prop firms with no activation fee exist?

Yes. Topstep's No Activation Fee path waives the $149 activation charge in exchange for a higher monthly subscription, and FTMO states no activation fee at all, refunding its one-time challenge fee on the first profit split instead. Compare the waived fee against the higher recurring cost before choosing a path.
